Doctor-patient relationship

September 29, 2020

It is a relationship that happens to be like love at first sight. The competence of the doctor should be so strong that the patient should submit himself or herself to the extent that of complex procedures where the outcome is not guaranteed. The belief of the patient should be such that the doctor should reinvent the treatment methods to the extent of the medical revolution.

1977, Dr. Andreaz .R Gruentzig did first angioplasty on patient Mr. Adolf Bachman both were 37 years of age.Dr.Andreaz. R Grüntzig did explain that coronary angioplasty had only been performed in dogs at that stage and that it had never been done in humans before. The doctor’s ( Gruentzig) idea ( angioplasty with balloon) was mocked by the surgical community at that time.
Despite the fact, Mr. Adolf Bachman underwent the first human coronary angioplasty and created PTCA.A history. The first patient (Mr. Adolf Bachman) still alive even after 41 years after the angioplasty but the cardiologist (who did the procedure Dr.Andreaz.R Gruentzig) died in a plane crash in 1985. By today’s logic angioplasty is safer than traveling on airplanes.

In this google era, a misinformed patient will be roaming around doing doctor shopping.
A well-read doctor will be writing a lot of files for medicolegal issues. Two parallel circles of opinions will be circulating on the media without getting a fusion of concepts. Trust deficit widens the gap between the circles. Money minded communication tools keep the credentials on fire. The patient will be in search of the BEST, forget being good in bad times.
The doctor will be doing the SIMPLEST and safest approach to treat, forget being a savior in the worst times. Complex addictive media will be sticking to the controversies of least importance without being broader in pictures of thoughts or facts. When people are paying price for their mistakes of the past, forget about the invention and research for tomorrow. An experienced patient is as good as a doctor, an experienced doctor is as good as a scientist to reinvent himself beyond existing beliefs. Trust, care, transparency, informed consent, shared decision making, mutual respect, and commitment can strengthen the doctor-patient relationship. Credentials of the media can bridge the gap between the circles.
